Mahalia

^^

When: Thursday 30th January
Where: Metro Theatre

After making waves on her sell-out debut Australian visit in January this year, UK singer-songwriter Mahalia returns to our shores with a brand new, critically celebrated album under her belt. “R&B’s new big star has finally arrived… Her melodic, neo-soul style proved popular, especially her more recent hits with their woozy, electronic-tinged edge and more evocative lyricism” – UK Evening Standard. Released in September, Love and Compromise features soul-pop gems ‘I Wish I Missed My Ex’, ‘What You Did’ with Ella Mai, and ‘Simmer’ featuring Burna Boy. The alt-R&B/soul singer counts Ed Sheeran as one of her fans, a tweet, duet video, and support slot rallying fans early in her career, and features on Rudimental’s hit, ‘We The Generation’, performing with the group on Later… with Jools Holland. Mahalia’s captivating live show has earned her praise the world over, and across countless sold out international headline dates. The raw-but-refined emotion in her songs makes for a deeply personal set, interspersed with stories and admissions. Topping YouTube’s 2019 #UKOnesToWatch list earlier this year, Mahalia’s live show is not to be missed.

NF: The Search Tour

^^

When: Monday 3rd February
Where: Enmore Theatre

Following a sold out North American tour, US rapper NF has announced the expansion of his current world tour “The Search Tour” with a run of Australian shows. Described as “a rapper who’s here to unpack his guilt and regret in rapid-fire lyrical outbursts,” (Stereogum). Operating from outside of the system and against all odds, NF quietly and unassumingly ascended to the forefront of modern hip-hop on his own terms. His independently released “Perception” album shocked the industry by debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 and shone a light on a fervent fan-driven movement surrounding the artist. It also bowed at #1 on the Top Rap Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It was the ultimate underdog story of 2017, as chronicled by The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Forbes, with the latter noting, “NF’s success speaks to what can be done these days outside of the traditional system.”

Moving Pictures began in 1979. Within a year, they had made their reputation as one of the best live acts in Sydney. They were all superb musicians, and in Alex Smith, they had an exceptional vocalist and world class front man. In 1981, they recorded their debut album, “Days Of Innocence”, including the smash hit “What About Me”, both of which went to the top on the charts. The band enjoyed several very successful years before the pressure of relentless touring took its toll, and, in 1987, they split. Alex went to London to with Harry Vanda and George Young, and spent many years working with some all-time rock legends. Garry formed the chart-topping band, “1927”, while Ian, Mark and Charlie are the A-list of Australia’s session musicians. In 2011, Moving Pictures reformed for a 30th anniversary tour, which culminated in a sensational sold out show at Sydney’s State Theatre, where the band’s powerhouse set shook the foundations. Every year since, they have toured Australia to rave reviews. The band are the best they have ever been. Early in 2018, Moving Pictures were part of the sold out National Red Hot Summer Tour, where they played a killer set of all their hits, plus some awesome covers of rock classics.

Japanese instrumental rock group MONO are in the midst of a world tour celebrating their 20th anniversary and now have announced they will return to Australia in March 2020, three years since their last visit. Originally formed in 1999, MONO’s unique approach blends orchestral arrangements and shoegaze guitar noise into memorable and emotional epics. Consistently held in high regard by their peers, their music has been praised by media, including NME proclaiming “This is music for the Gods.” Amongst their fans, they are revered as one of the best live experiences in rock. They are also one of the hardest working bands on the planet – their annual world tours consist of over 150 shows and they have also established themselves as respected curators for the After Hours Festivals in China and Japan. The tour follows landmark shows in iconic venues such as The Barbican in London & The Regent Theater in Los Angeles. The band was also invited to headline London’s Meltdown Festival at the invitation of The Cure’s Robert Smith. Amidst all this, MONO released their 10th studio album “Nowhere Now Here” produced by long time collaborator Steve Albini. “Nowhere Now Here” features the band at the peak of their powers, casting a wide net from pummelling waves of sound to the delicate and melancholy passages that they are beloved for creating. Having cemented their place amongst their post-rock and shoegaze contemporaries such as Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, My Blood Valentine and Mogwai, MONO are nonetheless peerless in terms of their incendiary live performances. Returning once again to Australian shores, this tour is a celebration of the breadth of MONO’s career and will visit Sydney. Joining as very special guest for all shows is British cellist and composer Jo Quail, who has toured extensively with MONO as well as featuring in Australia at landmark venues such as Melbourne Recital Hall & Adelaide Festival. MONO will reprise their acclaimed performance at this year’s Roadburn Festival with Jo as a special guest performer during a career-spanning 100-minute set. Taka of MONO says “Australia has always been a special place for us, it's going to be 3 years since the last time we visited this beautiful country. We're very excited to share our music again with you all and celebrate our 20th year anniversary with all our Australian fans with a special set. See you soon!"

Marianas Trench

When: Sunday 5th April
Where: Metro Theatre

Canadian pop-rockers MARIANAS TRENCH will make a very welcome return to Australia’s east coast for a trio of explosive shows in April 2020 in support of their latest album release and iTunes Pop chart #1, Phantoms. Completing epic treks across North America, UK and Europe, the Suspending Gravity Tour will touch down in Sydney’s Metro Theatre on April 5, ahead of performances at Download UK in June. VIP Packages are also available including access to a special Q&A session and Meet & Greet with the band. Hitting #1 on iTunes Pop chart here and in the USA, as well as their native Canada, Phantoms is Marianas Trench’s fifth studio album following their 2006 debut Fix Me, Masterpiece Theatre (2009), Ever After (2011) and Astoria (2015). Marianas Trench draw on well-established strengths – their trademark, heavily layered harmonies, as well as blazing guitars set against club-worthy beats - but Phantoms also finds the Vancouver-based four-piece pushing their musical boundaries relentlessly. From the jaw-dropping opener, ‘Eleonora’ – a heavily layered a cappella salute to Edgar Allan Poe’s 1842 short story of the same name – to the unapologetically epic closer, ‘The Killing Kind’, with its deep orchestration, ripping guitars and vocal gymnastics. “Each time we do an album, I try and write something that’s out of my vocal reach that forces me to get better,” says founding member and frontman Josh Ramsay, adding that bassist Mike Ayley, guitarist Matt Webb and drummer Ian Casselman, his “three favourite collaborators,” are equally dedicated to pushing their limits vocally and instrumentally - making for a dynamic live show.

Larkin Poe

^^

When: Wednesday 15th April
Where: Factory Theatre

After a sell-out run in 2019, blues sisters Larkin Poe are back to play even bigger venues in both Melbourne and Sydney this April. Taking a modern interpretation on traditional blues music, the Lovell’s performance is like a breath of fresh air to the blues scene. Making music under the name of their Great-Great-Great-Grandfather, Larkin Poe create a unique brand of gritty, southern-fried blues, roots ‘n’ roll. Rebecca Lovell’s voice is full, comforting and charismatic as is seamlessly blends into her big sister Megan’s gospel-like backing vocals. Both performing as multi-instrumentalists, it’s Megan that often steals the show, providing the perfect balance with some cracking lap steal solos; their performances that have garnered plenty of high-profile admirers such as Elvis Costello, Keith Urban, Bob Seger and Russell Crowe. Their latest album ‘Venom & Faith’ pushes the genre-defining boundaries on the understanding of Southern influenced music to a limit. Larkin Poe balance their love for experimenting with new sound techniques against a celebration of traditional blues music. With a few unexpected twists including an electronic synth pad, horn section and a tight bass and drum section – the energy from their live show is something that can only come from family ties and is a thrilling depiction of blues in the 21st Century. "The band keeps a strong outlaw mentality and defy expectations of roots rock” - Paste Magazine.

Louis Tomlinson

^^

When: Saturday 25th April
Where: Qudos Bank Arena

LOUIS TOMLINSON has returned with his joyous new single ‘We Made It’, an ode to teen dreams and young love, which fuses both the euphoric indie influences of Louis's teen years with more contemporary electronic pop sounds – out now. Alongside the release of the single, Louis announced a World Tour for 2020 that will visit London, Glasgow, Doncaster and Manchester, alongside Europe, UAE, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, the USA and Canada. In Australia, Louis will perform two headline shows beginning on Saturday, April 25 at the Big Top in Sydney and at Melbourne’s iconic Palais Theatre on Monday, April 27. Tickets for both shows go on sale at 12pm Friday, November 1. My Live Nation members can secure tickets first during the exclusive pre-sale beginning 11am Thursday, October 31 until 11am Friday, November 1. The new track is inspired by stolen nights out in Manchester in the early days of One Direction. “Any time off I had, I’d go to Manchester for nights out with my mates. It made me realise I didn’t live in the real world anymore and I missed it. I loved being normal, reckless and stupid. It was the best escape. We’d stay up all night, talking about our dreams and what we thought would happen to us. That age is such an exciting time. You’ve no idea what the future holds, but you have so much potential. Where is my life headed? Who knows?" “The chorus of ‘We Made It’ is also about me and the fans. Between us, it has taken a lot to get here. I’ve had to work really hard, had to learn about so much about myself. I feel as though only when I get out to tour, to sing these songs directly to the fans, will I have cemented the start of my solo career.” Ask Louis why he only recently felt ready to record a solo album and is only now itching to be back on stage and he’ll tell you straight – the songs. His run of hits in 2017, including hugely successful collaborations with Bebe Rexha and Steve Aoki, were in retrospect a mere dipping of toes in the water. Temperature tested he made some decisions – Louis wanted to be an artist who had his own sound and something to say. Chasing chart positions and radio play had to take a back seat to making music that meant something to him and, in turn, to those all-important fans. “There was definitely a process of understanding where I sit musically,” says Louis. “I have my own tastes and, to a certain extent, they are fighting against the musical tide. “When I grew up, pop meant Arctic Monkeys, Oasis, The Killers and Amy Winehouse. Times change, obviously. Currently pop is very urban and street, which is not what I relate to. Sure, I could make those sort of songs, but they wouldn’t feel like me. The puzzle was how to please both myself and the fans.” Louis recently headlined the Coca-Cola music festival in Madrid to an audience of 25,000 people. Earlier this year, Louis picked up the Best Song Award at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards for his recent single 'Two Of Us', which has so far hit 40 million streams on Spotify, with YouTube views at 23 million. In 2018 Louis won an iHeart Award for 'Best Solo Breakout', and an EMA Award for 'Best UK & Ireland Act' in 2017. He was ranked No.5 on Billboard’s emerging artists of 2018 and has over 60 million combined followers on social media. As a member of One Direction, Louis has sold over 100 million records. Overall Louis’s solo music has garnered over a BILLION streams. “I feel like a new artist now. It’s taken a while for me to be comfortable on my own, to learn to trust my gut and make sure I get what I want. I feel the most confident I’ve ever been, both as a songwriter and a singer, and the most mature. Of course I want to be successful, but what matters is what my music means to me and what it means to the fans. That’s the priority. The rest we’ll have to wait and see.”

Best Newcomer Nominee - Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2019. Hey you guys! I’m Nina Oyama! Comedian. Writer. Actress. Possum. That’s right. I danced around in a possum suit on ABC’s The Set. Actually, you might know me better as Courtney from ‘Utopia’, or playing kooky characters on ‘Kinne Tonight’, and ‘Tonightly with Tom Ballard’. But for my brand-new hour of comedy, I’m just doing me. It’s a new character I'm working on. Just kidding. It's just me! “Her honest and passionate delivery really had the audience locked in for the ride ★★★★” - The Music. “A natural at comedy” - Chortle. “A warm presence that means you still like her even when you’re shaking your head at her sheer stupidity” - Time Out.

L7

^^

When: Wednesday 20th May
Where: Metro Theatre

Unmistakable in their own unique sound, L7 pioneered the grunge movement with their furious music and feminist ideals. Following their breakthrough 1992 album Bricks Are Heavy, L7 became one of the most highly-regarded grunge acts of the era with hits like "Pretend We're Dead” and “Shitlist”, while their live sets were infamous, fuelled by high-energy, slamming, dancing and stage-diving. On L7’s new album Scatter The Rats they remain a raucous, subversive, and vital voice in rock. Back with their trademark distorted, heavy riffs, headbanging rhythms and indelible melodies, L7 are taking on society’s biggest dickheads, the fakers and liars, and everyone who doubted them.
