Montaigne

^^

When: Friday 29th November
Where: Metro Theatre

READY is not just Montaigne's most anthemic single to date, it's an anthem with something to say. "I was so reluctant to take ownership of it at first was so far I've been the self deprecating tortured artist who's talked about my neurosis, whereas this song is 'I believe in myself' and 'I'm ready to utilise my abilities'. That's something I've been working hard to finesse. "Putting a song out about self worth now, I'm in a place where I do think that much about myself, I work really hard every day to be really good at what I do, I've earned that confidence.” There's also a Trojan Horse factor buried in the lyrics of Ready. Sure it's booming pop song on the surface with that killer motivational chorus to remind yourself to stay on the grind ("I think I'm ready and I'm at the edge of the cliff, so let's begin..") and some seriously brilliant vocals. But in the song's final verse Montaigne sings "take me to the final stage, gimme gimme equal wage, I am no longer afraid.”

Miami Horror

^^

When: Friday 13th December
Where: Metro Theatre

On October 31st, Miami Horror kicks off a 17-date North American tour featuring an all star lineup. What began as a solo project by Plant, Miami Horror quickly grew into a four-piece live band. The new six-piece iteration of the show will now see the group as a living, breathing organism, ever-changing in their diverse musical influences. For the upcoming shows, the band will feature vocalists Reva Devito (Portland, OR), TC Milan (Brooklyn, NY) alongisde Melbourne local Queen Magic on guitar, while current vocalist and guitarist Josh Moriarty takes a much needed break from touring. "Luv Is Not Enough" follows the single "Restless," which marked the band's shift toward their collaborative and production-based roots, marrying the funk elements of their past with a softer R&B-leaning vocal. It was a direction that Plant champions as the new incarnation of the project. "Restless" combines dreamy, lo-fi funk guitar, relaxed, 70s-esque drums, and a sultry, impassioned vocal. The sepia-glazed music video directed by Keenan Wetzel (Haux, Aisha Badru) finds an assortment of quirky characters coming together for some good old-fashioned tennis training and a spark of lust.

Lewis Capaldi

^^

When: Thursday 2nd January
Where: Hordern Pavilion

As his blockbuster debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent ticks over to 1 billion streams worldwide and enters its fifth week at the top of the UK charts, Scottish singer- songwriter Lewis Capaldi has wasted no time in announcing his return to Australia and New Zealand with three towering 2020 shows in Sydney,Melbourne and Auckland. Capaldi has had a sensational 18 months in which his lovelorn songcraft and mind-blowing vocal abilities have bewitched listeners both at home and abroad. Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is the UK’s fastest selling debut of 2019 so far and tickets to his March 2020 tour of the UK and Ireland have disappeared within seconds of going on sale. Still only 22, the sometimes heartbroken, often cheeky Scot’s signature tune is the extraordinary ‘Someone You Loved’. As the perfect showcase for his sweeping, emotive and unbelievably powerful voice, the song has proved a tonic to the jangled emotions of music lovers worldwide, especially here in Australia. Capaldi’s other singles have also managed to hit every nerve on the way through. In fact, his debut track ‘Bruises’, written as he recovered from a particularly nasty breakup, went absolutely bananas upon release in 2017 as it clocked up 28 million Spotify streams and made him the fastest unsigned artist ever to reach 25 million plays on the platform. A prodigy from the get-go, Capaldi grew up in Bathgate – a small town near Glasgow – and was busy learning the drums and guitar by the age of two. Naturally, by the time he was nine, a young Lewis was seen sneaking into local pubs and blowing patrons away with his astonishing talents. From there he honed his craft, letting his brothers record collection (filled with the best of Nirvana and Bob Dylan) influence him and building his own musical sensibilities. His penchant for sparse, emotionally resonant songcraft attracted attention as he distributed demo recordings of himself playing in a bathroom, eventually catching the ears of a curious local scene. Flash forward a couple of years and we will find Lewis Capaldi hitting Australia in the middle of an absolute hot streak. Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent outsold the rest of the UK top 10 combined upon release last month also saw him nominated for The Brit’s Critics Choice award.

Laibach

^^

When: Thursday 16th January
Where: Metro Theatre

Slovenia’s industrial pop pioneers and political provocateurs were the first ‘foreign’ rock band to be invited into North Korea and perform in Pyongyang. Now they’re coming to Sydney to take on The Sound of Music—and selected songs from their back catalogue, reaching back to 1980—including Also Sprach Zarathustra, Spectre, Sympathy for the Devil, WAT, Kapital, Volk, Laibach Revisited... All with experimental flair and boundary-smashing gusto. For nearly forty years now, from their genesis in the then-Yugoslavian industrial town Trbovlje, Laibach are still the most internationally acclaimed band to have come out of the former Communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. The Sound of Music was conceived when Laibach were infamously invited to perform in North Korea in 2015. The band performed several songs from the 1965 film’s soundtrack at the concert in Pyongyang, chosen by Laibach as it’s a well-known and beloved film in the DPRK and often used by schoolchildren to learn English. The album gives the Laibach treatment to tracks such as ‘My Favorite Things’, ‘Edelweiss’, ‘Do-Re-Mi’ and ‘Maria’, here reworked as ‘Maria / Korea’ (“How do you solve a problem like Maria / Korea?”).

MONO

^^

When: Saturday 7th March
Where: Metro Theatre

Special Guest: Jo Quail

Japanese instrumental rock group MONO are in the midst of a world tour celebrating their 20th anniversary and now have announced they will return to Australia in March 2020, three years since their last visit. Originally formed in 1999, MONO’s unique approach blends orchestral arrangements and shoegaze guitar noise into memorable and emotional epics. Consistently held in high regard by their peers, their music has been praised by media, including NME proclaiming “This is music for the Gods.” Amongst their fans, they are revered as one of the best live experiences in rock. They are also one of the hardest working bands on the planet – their annual world tours consist of over 150 shows and they have also established themselves as respected curators for the After Hours Festivals in China and Japan. The tour follows landmark shows in iconic venues such as The Barbican in London & The Regent Theater in Los Angeles. The band was also invited to headline London’s Meltdown Festival at the invitation of The Cure’s Robert Smith. Amidst all this, MONO released their 10th studio album “Nowhere Now Here” produced by long time collaborator Steve Albini. “Nowhere Now Here” features the band at the peak of their powers, casting a wide net from pummelling waves of sound to the delicate and melancholy passages that they are beloved for creating. Having cemented their place amongst their post-rock and shoegaze contemporaries such as Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, My Blood Valentine and Mogwai, MONO are nonetheless peerless in terms of their incendiary live performances. Returning once again to Australian shores, this tour is a celebration of the breadth of MONO’s career and will visit Sydney. Joining as very special guest for all shows is British cellist and composer Jo Quail, who has toured extensively with MONO as well as featuring in Australia at landmark venues such as Melbourne Recital Hall & Adelaide Festival. MONO will reprise their acclaimed performance at this year’s Roadburn Festival with Jo as a special guest performer during a career-spanning 100-minute set. Taka of MONO says “Australia has always been a special place for us, it's going to be 3 years since the last time we visited this beautiful country. We're very excited to share our music again with you all and celebrate our 20th year anniversary with all our Australian fans with a special set. See you soon!"

The 1980 Tour reminds us that these things are possible. Both ‘Vienna’ and ‘Visage’ were the sound of the future… and yet still sound unearthly, romantic, impossibly beautiful and full of promise. Brought to life by Midge Ure and Band Electronica, this is the very first time in the 40 years since it was made that the ‘Vienna’ album will be performed in its entirety. It is also the first time that many of the songs from the debut Visage album will be played live.
